NWSHBC Show

September, 6. 2008

Our Local Lower Puget Sound Dressage Club team had a very
successful, but strenuous day at the Northwest Sporthorse
Breeder’s Classic September 6 at Spanaway.
An early start was planned for Dorothy Begley-Broecker’s
Amazing Avatar and Cathy Yaskin’s Classic Moonlite Son
(Eclipse). Avatar however, was not in a hurry. After being very
patient through bathing, braiding and leg bandaging, he
decided, “hey, I’m a yearling colt”. So he was being somewhat
coltish about loading. So we got underway late from Cathy’s.
But with Rene Salant’s expert driving and unexpected light
traffic we made it, and met up with Cheryl Rife and Liliput there.
The session started out on a pleasant note: Lisa Gardner, the
very efficient (and politically correct) show manager, asked
how Gene got himself surrounded by so many beautiful
woman? They were an eye-pleasing group. All neatly outfitted
in black jeans and matching white polo shirts.
First off was Dressage Type SH, yearling colts and geldings,
with a class of 9. Avatar came in 2nd, and Eclipse 3rd. Liliput
placed 3rd out of four in Dressage type SH, weanling fillies. The
afternoon saw the breed classes. Liliput was 1st in the Barouge
Horses. Next was Avatar in Holsteiner. I had the honor and
pleasure of awarding him the Constitution Cup, named in honor
of the late Holsteiner stallion, the first in the Northwest, who
died unexpectedly in 1989. All us owners of his get contributed
to the trophy, and their names and horses names are engraved
on plates on the wooden base. I was of course very pleased
because Avatar’s dam, Colonel’s Lady was my first foal, way
back in 1988! I expect to win it back next year, because I have
borrowed back Colonel’s Lady (Nellie) from Dorothy, who now
owns her, and she is in foal to Ariadus, who is also Avatar’s sire.
Our day ended with Eclipse getting 2nd in Rheinland Pfalz Saar.
Our judge was the legendary Hilda Gurney. I had the pleasure
of a nice chat with her. She said she had known Constitution.
Our return trip was quick and uneventful. My daughter picked
me up a Cathy’s. But Renee and Dorothy had to unload Eclipse,
then trailer Avatar back to Southworth and put him to bed, so
they had a long, but pleasant and productive day.

Letter from a little girl wanting a horse
of her own!
Make A Wish Foundation

My name is Brenna Crain and I am a volunteer for the
Make-A-Wish Foundation.  I live here in Bellingham and I
have a 14 year old girl named Elizabeth that has wished for
a horse for her wish.  We have been horse shopping for a
few months now and still have been unable to find just the
right horse for her.  She has intermediate riding
experience, works at a stable on the San Juan Island and
teaches kids lessons.  She took a jumping class once
while she was staying at Children's hospital in Seattle and
she really loved it.  She is partial to paints, but I think more
than anything she is wanting to find a horse that has
experience, training, good blood lines, and is young
(tough combination we have found).  We of course
welcome any help donation wise, but our maximum budget
for this horse is $3000.  Do you have any suggestions or
know of any potentials that I can follow up on?  She really
liked the look of Abby on your website classifieds (I was
directed there by a gal named Marilyn Hagen from Mt
Vernon, not sure her connection).

Any help you can give us is so very much appreciated.

Have a good weekend, look forward to hearing from you
soon.

Brenna
