For those of you who don’t know me, I’ve recently been given the opportunity to serve as President of the Lower Puget Sound Dressage Club.

I’m taking over for Meghan Markham who has done a great job for the past 3 years, and saw us through the transition from Equestrians Institute to the Oregon Dressage Society.

I’m very excited about the future of the club, particularly excited about our re-establishing the youth portion of our club.

I believe that we owe it to our club to promote the youth, and to provide them with good examples.

In light of that, I feel compelled to share something that has made the biggest difference in my horse career:

Many years ago, a friend of mine who was getting out of horses offered me his tack, and various other horse paraphernalia, including a book, the Complete Training of Horse and Rider by Colonel Alois Podhasky.

At the time, I had no idea who this person was, and didn’t give the book a lot of thought. But when I started reading the book, I learned that he had been the Director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, the oldest Riding School in the World, from 1939 to 1966.

I later found out that Walt Disney had made a movie about him – The Miracle of the White Stallions. This book has been the most important piece of information on horses that I have ever found. Any questions or problems I have ever had, I have been able to find the answers in this book.

I’d like to leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the Complete Training of Horse and Rider:

“Equestrian art, perhaps more than any other, is closely related to the wisdom of life. Many of the same principles may be applied as a line of conduct to follow. The horse teaches us self control, consistency, and the ability to understand what goes on in the minds and feelings of other creatures, qualities that are important throughout our lives.

Moreover, from this relationship with his horse, the rider will learn that only kindness and mutual understanding will bring about achievements of the highest perfection”.

I’m looking forward seeing you all at the monthly meetings, and getting together at the shows. And if anyone is up for a trail ride, I’m always up for the adventure.
